A good point was brought up by a fellow Chamber member recently that asked the question "What is the difference between the Salem Chamber's efforts in representing the interests of business with government and taking political action? Aren't they the same thing?"
It was a very good question, hence the blog posting and a soon to be uploaded audio briefing.
Without a doubt, membership in the Salem Chamber can be confusing because we simply have so much going on. But no matter what we do, our eff…

Outside of the business world, business owners and employers can get a bad wrap. In a capitalistic society, the pursuits to make a profit are justification for some to claim businesspeople are just greedy and money hungry.
Business news and media coverage on a national scale can add to the negativity and cause more bad will. But as businesspeople, we must remember that it is up to us to change misconceptions about what it means to be in business and the good that can come from that pursuit.

WASHINGTON D.C., – Oregon small businesses may be eligible for interest-free loans under a new program created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), announced by Congressman Kurt Schrader (D-OR) today. The newly launched “America’s Recovery Capital” (ARC) program will allow small businesses to take interest free loans of $35,000 to reduce their debt.
“As a small business owner I understand how crippling debt can be for small companies,” said Schrader. “In this economy, lenders a…

What is the proper way to market your business? I hear that several times a week, though my work as a Business Coach, Consultant and Instructor. We all want more customers! By now you know I am about keeping it simple. There is no magic bullet, contrary to what some marketing sales people will tell you. Personal contact is the number one way people get to know you and then they are more willing to do business with you. The problem is that if no business comes from that initial meeting than we do…

It’s no secret that our state government faces some major budget challenges. Elected officials are scrambling in the halls of the legislature trying to figure out how they are going to close the gap between the amount of money they expect to collect and the plans they have for budget spending in the next biennium.
Many are talking about the need to increase fees and taxes from business in order to balance the budget. At the time of this writing, Oregon has the 2nd highest unemployment rate in t…

We are surrounded daily by people. How do feel at the end of the day? Do you dread going to work or going home or do you look forward to it? Sometimes we get so much into our habit and routines we do not see that one or two people who are close to us can drain us of our passion for life. This is assuming of course you are not one of those people! For the most part you get to pick and choose your circle. Why not then surrou…

Ron Keleman was the speaker at today's Build Your Business seminar, and he talked about working on your business instead of just working in your business. This is a challenge for most of us - we get so bogged down with the day to day tasks that we can lose track of the big picture.
Now is a great time to refocus on your business, and get prepared, so when things turn around you will be ready.
Here's a couple of questions to help get you started:
Where do you want to be?
Where do you want your b…

I'm in Charleston, West Virginia, at a Charleston Area Alliance Business After Hours hosted by City National Bank, and across the room I spy a face I remember. This gentleman in wearing a name tag that says "Matthew," and I said to my host from the West Virginia (state) Chamber of Commerce, "I know that guy."
"There's no way," she replies. "You're three thousand miles from home."
But I insisted, and then it came to me. "Mingrone," I said. "His last name is Mingrone." Matthew Mingrone was the M…

Oregon is ranked #20 in identity theft crime (which is actually much better than we used to be - we used to be #7).
Most people don't even know it's happened until something big happens. I.D. theft is also linked to meth use, which is part of the reason we are ranked this high.
Diane Childs from the Department of Consumer and Business Services was here for the Build Your Business seminar this morning to talk about the new I.D. theft laws that will be coming into effect in January.
There are so…
